“This work was made expressly for an exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London in 1978 curated by Richard Cork. This followed closely on the heels of another Richard Cork show at the Serpentine Gallery ‘Art for Who?’ and I suppose was intended as an answer to the question. Submissions for the Whitechapel show were openly invited. I made a fairly simple piece of work in which advertsient hoardings were electronically wiped from the screen to reveal the often squalid scenes which they revealed. …

“This was intended to be, and still may be the first of a series of shortish tapes which concentrated on a single year of the 20th century and of my lifetime. The rule was that all the material, images and sound, were in some way associated with that year but I try to avoid a history channel approach. To this day this is the only video piece I have made that uses found material. The starting point was the final shot of 3 parachutes slowly collapsing during a re-enactment of the Berlin air lift. …

“A Haiku. Shot in domestic surroundings, making use of whatever images and objects came to hand, I tried to assemble a narrative or failing that suggest a situation that was open ended enough to be recognisable by a viewer in terms of his or her own memories or emotions. It seems to fit in easily with a number of tapes or installations with maritime themes that I made around this time.” Mick Hartney, March 2008 …

“On 21st January 1980 word spread around Brighton that a fairly large boat had been grounded on the beach near the palace pier. The art college is only a few minutes from the beach so it was fairly inevitable that I would grab a portapack and head in that direction. A crowd had already gathered and many of them like me were there to record the event, mainly with still cameras. The rescue services were doing what they could and no one’s life seemed in peril so I recorded for about half and hour and then went back to work. …

“Following on from the simple deployment of chroma-key in Cloud Cover, I planned a more complex use of the device, which would include a parallel use of spoken text. I had discovered that a readily available coloured mounting board available from any artists suppliers, gave better results for chroma-key than the officially recommended shade of blue. Using a standard sized example of this board as a kind of moving matte, I built up several layers of my own image wearing different coloured clothes to distinguish them. …

“The main TV studio at Brighton Polytechnic was equipped with a chroma-key facility and I was interested to see what could be done with it apart from weather presenter type superimpositions. I felt that the bringing together of two spaces into a single image would be more effective the more similarities there were. I came up with a very simple idea of using the same mirror in the same orientation apparently reflecting both an interior and an exterior space in one seamless sequence” …

“The basic idea behind state of division was that a videotape would be found on a bus and played by the finder. It would be found to contain the rambling statement of a character aware of himself only as a video recording. In fact the tape was an attempt to deal in a state of tranquility with the experience of period of clinical depression I had had some years before. As I was no longer affected by these feelings, …
