After the Flood (Before the Fire)

After the Flood (Before the Fire)

“This was part of a work commissioned by LVA to utilise a video in a window of the Air Gallery during an exhibition of video art entitled ‘Scanners’. I was one of, I think’ 4 artists invited to participate. Each would supply 3 channels of video images to be incorporated into looped sequences which would be displayed on 9 monitors. Before starting on the work I became very excited about the possibilities of making images which would link across the monitors in any direction, …

Embarkation III

“A Haiku. Shot in domestic surroundings, making use of whatever images and objects came to hand, I tried to assemble a narrative or failing that suggest a situation that was open ended enough to be recognisable by a viewer in terms of his or her own memories or emotions. It seems to fit in easily with a number of tapes or installations with maritime themes that I made around this time.” Mick Hartney, March 2008 …

I had discovered that a readily available coloured mounting board available from any artists suppliers, gave better results for chroma-key than the officially recommended shade of blue. Using a standard sized example of this board as a kind of moving matte, I built up several layers of my own image wearing different coloured clothes to distinguish them. …

Cloud Cover

“The main TV studio at Brighton Polytechnic was equipped with a chroma-key facility and I was interested to see what could be done with it apart from weather presenter type superimpositions. I felt that the bringing together of two spaces into a single image would be more effective the more similarities there were. I came up with a very simple idea of using the same mirror in the same orientation apparently reflecting both an interior and an exterior space in one seamless sequence” …
