REWIND YUGOSLAVIA 1969-91 Call for Contributions

REWIND Yugoslavia 1969-91 is a project focused on video art production, discussion and consumption from the former Yugoslavia, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK). The project is led by Gray’s School of Art, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, working in partnership with Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD), University of Dundee.

This is the latest funded research project in REWIND’s long history of investigating, examining and preserving early works of video art. Established in 2004, previous projects have included REWIND: British Artists Video in the 70s & 80s (2012), REWIND Italia(2015), EWVA- European Womens’ Video Art (2019). More information can be found at https://rewind.ac.uk/

REWIND Yugoslavia is led by Dr. Jonathan Blackwood (Gray’s School of Art), together with Dr Laura Leuzzi and Dr. Maja Zećo (Gray’s) and Adam Lockhart (DJCAD, University of Dundee). We will be acting as the book’s editors.

Working with John Libbey Publishing, who have produced all publications from previous REWIND projects, we are now looking for contributions for our anthology of research into Yugoslav video art. Each of the editors will be contributing from their own disciplinary perspective and body of expertise, but it is very important to us that voices from the former Yugoslav space play a full part in delivering the anthology.

We are interested in topics such as: national and local histories of video art, video art aesthetics, cross-Yugoslav infrastructures and networks including video art colonies and festivals, video art and television, video art and gender/ sexuality, video art and music, artist’s perspectives, curatorial perspectives, video art and technology. This is an indicative, not an exclusive list of potential topics.

We are open to standard academic chapters (6,000-8,000 words) or shorter form artist testimonies or monographic essays (3,000-4,000 words). Each selected author will have the opportunity to submit up to five images to illustrate their chapter.

The deadline for submitted abstracts (max 500 words) is Friday, September 11 2026 by 1600GMT. Successful applicants will be notified in early October. After that, we would expect a draft for review by the end of November 2026, with final delivery of manuscripts and copyright-cleared visual material by the end of January 2027, to allow for publication in summer 2027.
