‘This piece attempts (and knowingly fails) to reconcile television footage on video – a car and on-foot cops and robbers chase from “The Sweeny” circa1977 with Aesops fable of the Tortoise and the Hare re-enacted by Alison Winckle (the walking tortoise), myself (the running hare) filmed chasing round a circle by Keith Frake in Bow Cemetry. The screening/performance involved an 8mm back projection of the filmed action with DC running on the spot in front of it with the video of the car chase on a monitor to one side.’ …
“Static Acceleration was first made in a 17 minute version on a half-inch open reel edit deck. A relatively new medium for artists at that time, video was still in the process of being explored for its possibilities and limitations. This is one of a series of works I made in the 1970’s examining specific technical properties while also relating them to expressive or emotive content.
