“After some considerable time playing, fiddling and experimenting with the possibilities of video, this was the first piece of work that I thought might stand up to scrutiny by the audience. The central image of a female figure was subjected to repeated transfers from tape to tape acquiring high contrast and instability in the process, an instability I did my best to control and create. Colour was added almost arbitrarily of which I am not now proud. …
“This was part of a work commissioned by LVA to utilise a video in a window of the Air Gallery during an exhibition of video art entitled ‘Scanners’. I was one of, I think’ 4 artists invited to participate. Each would supply 3 channels of video images to be incorporated into looped sequences which would be displayed on 9 monitors. Before starting on the work I became very excited about the possibilities of making images which would link across the monitors in any direction, …
“This was intended to be, and still may be the first of a series of shortish tapes which concentrated on a single year of the 20th century and of my lifetime. The rule was that all the material, images and sound, were in some way associated with that year but I try to avoid a history channel approach. To this day this is the only video piece I have made that uses found material. The starting point was the final shot of 3 parachutes slowly collapsing during a re-enactment of the Berlin air lift. …
